At Cherry Tree Academy, we believe that strong foundations in mathematics are essential for every child’s confidence, attainment, and long-term success. Our curriculum is carefully structured in line with guidance from the NCETM, ensuring learning is coherent, progressive, and builds securely on what pupils already know.
We are committed to developing a deep understanding of mathematics. Pupils are encouraged to recognise patterns, make connections, reason, and apply their knowledge in a range of contexts. In line with Ofsted expectations, new learning is consistently linked to prior knowledge, with regular checks to ensure pupils have secured key concepts before moving on. This approach enables children to build a connected and flexible understanding of mathematics over time.
A strong focus on number underpins our approach. Daily Mastering Number sessions support pupils in developing secure number sense, while structured, daily fluency practice—particularly in additive facts—helps children build accuracy, efficiency, and confidence in mental calculation. These approaches are carefully tracked to ensure all pupils make sustained progress.
Fluency in multiplication and division is also prioritised. Times tables are clearly mapped across the school, with consistent teaching and precise tracking to ensure pupils develop quick recall and can apply their knowledge effectively.
Through this combination of a mastery-informed curriculum, daily fluency practice, and robust assessment, we support all pupils to develop confidence, resilience, and a genuine enjoyment of mathematics, preparing them well for future learning.
