Geography at Cherry Tree Academy
SUBJECT LEAD: Mrs A Hutchinson
At Cherry Tree Academy, our intention is for all our children to develop a deep understanding of Geography concepts. We believe that Geography is more than just learning countries names and reading maps. Although this is important, Geography is essentially about understanding the world we live in. It helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. At Cherry Tree Academy, we aim to deliver a Geography Curriculum that is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know, remember and understand more.
Our teaching of Geography aims to help children gain a secure knowledge and understanding of range of places – both in Britain and abroad – to help develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Pontefract and Yorkshire so that they can develop of real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special. We also developing the children’s ability to apply geographical skills to enable to confidently communicate their findings and geographical understanding to a range of audiences.
Our Geography curriculum has been designed in a way to allow children to make links between both current and previous learning and to be able to make comparisons between the different Geographical concepts that have been taught, ranging from the Settlement to Earthquakes. The knowledge that children acquire builds year on year and allows them to develop a solid foundation to continue to progress successfully.
Throughout the study of Geography, children will gain a sense of Place, Space and Scale. Through this they will develop a sense of Cultural awareness and diversity. Our Geography lessons focus on working as Geographers and developing Geographical skills and there are many opportunities for the curriculum to be enriched through Geographical visits, visitors and events helped in school that complement the topics and learning that are being studied.
The Geography curriculum at Cherry Tree Academy ensures that children have the best possible start in life and leave our school with a lifelong love of learning, ready for the next stage in their education and life in the 21st Century.
