History Intent

SUBJECT LEAD: MISS J STUBBS-SIMMS & MRS A HUTCHINSON

At Cherry Tree Academy, we believe that history should be more than remembering events and the dates that they took place. Although this knowledge is important to history, it is ‘why’ things happened that must be investigated, and how these historical events impact on our lives today. At Cherry Tree Academy, we aim to deliver a history curriculum that is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more.

Our teaching of history aims to help children gain a secure knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our history curriculum has been designed in a way to allow children to make links between both current and previous learning and to be able to make comparisons between the different historical periods that have been taught, ranging from the Stone Age to the present day. The knowledge that children acquire builds year on year and allows them to develop a solid foundation to continue to progress successfully.

Throughout the study of history, children will gain a sense of chronology, and through this they will develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage. Our history lessons focus on working as historians and developing historical skills and there are many opportunities for the curriculum to be enriched through historical visits, visitors and events held in school that complement the topics and learning that are being studied.

The history curriculum at Cherry Tree Academy ensures that children have the best possible start in life and leave our school with a lifelong love of learning, ready for the next stage in their education.
