Maths at Cherry Tree Academy

SUBJECT LEAD: MR P WRIGHT

At Cherry Tree Academy, our intention is for all our children to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We aim for all children to access age related expectations and use a teaching for mastery approach. This means breaking new learning into small steps which are accessible to all and teaching learners to make connections and see patterns. Teachers in Key Stage 1 and 2 are supported in planning by the NCETM prioritisation curriculum. In Reception the Mastering Number Programme is used to support all children to develop fluency and number sense.

Maths is taught daily in all classes. In Key Stage 1 and 2, core lessons are supplemented with daily fluency and retrieval practice.

Core Maths Lessons

Whole class teaching includes modelling by the teacher, use of different representations including physical resources, partner discussions, an ‘I do, you do’ approach and opportunities for independent practice. Reasoning is incorporated throughout – children are expected to explain their thinking and use what they already know to solve problems.

Challenge

When children understand the mathematical concept, they are challenged to apply this knowledge in order to solve problems.

Support

All children are supported within their classroom with concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations to assist understanding of quality first teaching.  Where appropriate, children will receive targeted intervention to avoid falling behind.

Fluency

Mastering number enables the children in EYFS and KS1 to be fluent in key mathematical structures and know additive facts that are fundamental in progressing children in to KS2.  In KS2 multiplication tables are prioritised and practised daily.

Retrieval

To help them remember what they have previously been taught, children in years 1 to 6 are provided with daily practice questions.
